FAQs
What is a wooden Surfboard?
Wooden surfboards have a classic and timeless beauty. Paying homage to the first surfboards to exist, the wooden surfboard is a beautiful and functional ride where the natural grain patterns and textures of wood create unique and visually stunning boards.
Where does the wood come from?
Almost all of the wood and veneer used for Monte wooden boards is recycled or repurposed reducing the environmental impact, as sizing can be sporadic our building process involves precise engineering and efficient cutting techniques to maximize the use of the wood, leaving no waste behind. We developed our HEX Design in order to make use of the smaller pieces.
Do people really surf them?
Absolutely! All Monte surfboards are built to be surfed and to offer similar performance and experience as standard foam boards. The wood's natural flex pattern can provide a responsive and lively feel, making them enjoyable to ride in various wave conditions.
Monte boards are built as heirlooms that will last for generations, so even those that are art pieces should find their way onto waves.
How much do they cost?
Our hollow wooden surfboards start at £2000.
Our foam core wooden surfboards start at £900.
Our wooden SUP boards start at £3000.
Our wooden skim boards start at £200.
Our wooden hand planes start at £120.
With all our boards the design, length, shape, inlays and history of the reclaimed woods all impact the final price. We provide you an exact quote up front, and that's the price you pay. If your requirements change during the crafting process the price may change a bit, this will be confirmed before any changes are made. A 50% deposit is all that's required to get started. The rest is payable on completion.
How well do they surf?
Amazingly well! Every Monte surfboard is built to surf and offer similar performance and experience as standard foam boards.
Are they heavy?
Nope! Monte surfboards are relatively light. While they are a little heavier than a traditional foam board, surfers are always surprised by how light they are. The design and wood species you choose can impact the final weight. We can work with you to ensure a heavier or a lighter board depending on your needs.
Can you make different shape surfboards?
Of course, we specialise in custom shapes and designs.
Our standard wooden foam core surfboards are available in Mal, Mini Mal, Egg (Round Tail), Shortboard and Fish.
Our standard hollow surfboards are available in Single Fin, Egg (Round Tail), Longboard, Mini Simmons, Fish and Shortboard
With all of our boards we can create custom shapes.
Where are they made?
We have a workshop in Dorset where Roman Rodriguez "El Bigote" creates his masterpieces.
How long do they take to build?
Each board takes 5-10 weeks to complete. Depending on how many custom orders are in the queue, your board may take longer. We'll work with you to determine your requirements, give you a time frame for completion and provide the exact price of your board. We require a 50% deposit to get you in the queue, and we'll send you progress pictures throughout the crafting process!
